Capt RB Stratton joined the 38th Welsh Division Train. a horse transport unit in 1915, and throughout WWI, he was responsible for the last few miles of the logistic supply chain for the Welsh Troops.

He was at many of the famous battles, including The Somme, Ypres and Passchendale and the book's 199 letters provide a vivid picture of life and Trench Warfare on the Western Front

By contrast, the letters cover village and farming life in Machen in the early 20th century and details of the Stratton Family living on the Tredegar Estate.
